Hedge funds pulled out of this summer’s market havoc, recording average returns of 2.44% for the third quarter, according to Morningstar Inc.

Hedge funds pulled out of this summer’s market havoc, recording average returns of 2.44% for the third quarter, according to Morningstar Inc. Hedge funds gained 3.7% in September, beating a loss of 1.63% in August. Equity net neutral funds benefited from high volatility in the period, returning 3.03% during the quarter. Equity variable funds, which have net-short market exposure, also fared well with a 3.13% return. But net-long funds suffered, gaining 1.46%, Chicago-based Morningstar said.
